![]() ![]() ![]() The quality of the Barista Express Impress shots was excellent during my testing. Better yet, because the grinding and the tamping process took place in an enclosure, I didn't have to clean the espresso grounds off my kitchen counter. This elaborate process ensured I only had to adjust the coarseness of my ground beans it saved me time and frustration wasting ground coffee before finding the correct dose. I enjoyed this mechanical operation and sensory feedback when I prepared my shots. It's designed to deliver 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of pressure for consistent results and to finish every job with a twist for a perfectly flat puck - a must for pulling a good shot. The tamping lever is easy to operate, even for espresso newbies. (After several weeks of testing and more than 100 shots with the Barista Express Impress, this happened only once.) Translation? You will need to remove some ground coffee from the portafilter. On the other hand, if the machine ground more espresso than necessary, you'll see the lights above the green one come to life. And, remarkably, pressing the grinding button again will get you just the right amount of extra ground coffee, and tamping it will reward you with a green (as in, a good-to-go) light. In this case, only the shorter white lines underneath the big green one will light up in the dose level indicator, meaning that you need to grind more beans. The magic of the Impress puck system shines the brightest when the ground beans aren't enough for a perfect shot. If this is the case, you will see the big light in the middle (with a smiley on its side) glow in green, confirming it's time to extract your shot. This is when the dose-level light indicator becomes essential for confirming that the ground espresso is ready. Then, press the tamping lever on the espresso machine's left side. To begin grinding beans, you must press the sole backlit button on the left side of the appliance's control panel. The appliance can automatically adjust the amount of ground espresso for your single or double shot. They are the main reasons you should splurge on the Impress. If I had to use two words to describe Breville’s rightfully named Impress puck system of the Barista Express, I’d go for “pure magic.” Its efficiency and sheer convenience exceeded my expectations. The easy-to-access app (available for iOS and Android) makes the latter obsolete. The interactive onscreen instructions for setting the machine up, extracting espresso, and cleaning it are vastly more helpful than sifting through the pages of a booklet. ![]() Getting started with the Barista Express Impress is surprisingly intuitive and straightforward, thanks to the BILT mobile app. I had no trouble fitting it onto my minuscule NYC kitchen counter. The new product's footprint is reasonable, especially considering how feature-packed it is. The tamping lever, the dose button, and the dedicated light indicator set the Impress apart from the Barista Express, making it just a tad wider (by 0.4 inches) and deeper (by 1.1 inches). Both products have a stainless steel finish that looks great in most kitchen setups. Its integrated grinder, steam control knob, pressure indicator, and steam-control knob have an identical placement. The SetupĪt a glance, the Breville Barista Express Impress looks quite similar to the consumer-favorite Barista Express.
